Joe Andoe is an American painter and author. Andoe was born on December 5, 1955 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. As a child he loved to draw but never created any artwork until he was in college. Andoe first realized that painting could be his career when he was enrolled in community college studying agricultural business. He was taking an elective class in art history when he learned about artists such as Robert Smithson and Dennis Oppenheim. He soon changed his major and eventually earned a Master’s degree in Art from the University of Oklahoma in 1981. After college he moved to New York in 1982. Andoe is known for his use of monochromatic canvases, often depicting scenes and subject matter of rural and urban America. He has stated that he wants to “reduce images to their blueprint.” His works have been featured in exhibits internationally and also numerous museum shows including The Denver Art Museum, The Detroit Institute of Art, The Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, and The Whitney Museum of American Art. Andoe has an extensive exhibition record. Paintings by Andoe are represented in permanent collections of The San Diego Museum of Contemporary Art, The Metropolitan Museum of Art and The Museum of Modern Art in New York, and The Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. He is the author of the book Jubilee City: A Memoir at Full Speed (P.S.), which is a memoir about his life.
